Steven Spielberg, who was executive producer of the iconic film, said during a "Goonies" gathering on Josh Gad's "Reunited Apart" YouTube channel that he pulled a prank on director Richard Donner after the filming was complete.
Spielberg mentioned Donner was looking forward to a break from the cast of "high-energy" youth.
"Richard kept saying, 'Oh my God, I've had two weeks to go and I can't wait to finish and I'm going to go to my home in Hawaii, and I'm going to get away from all that noise. It's extraordinary and I love them to pieces but I can't stand it anymore, "recalled Spielberg.
So Spielberg secretly sent the entire cast to Hawaii - and right to Donner's house when the filming was finished.
"They all appeared in his living-room before Dick ever landed," he said.
The moment Donner spotted them was remembered by Martha Plimpton who played Stef in the 1985 film.
"He got down on his knees," she said. "He walked like a sheet white. We thought we'd give him a coronary. "In a fundraiser for The Center for Disaster Philanthropy, Gad brought together Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, Jeff Cohen, Robert Davi, Joe Pantoliano, Chris Columbus and Cyndi Lauper, along with Spielberg, Donner and Plimpton.
