Roma coach Paulo Fonseca is desperate to keep the defender Chris Smalling on loan from Manchester United for at least another season.

Harry Maguire's arrival last summer as the world's most expensive defender left Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a bloated squad and the 30-year-old was allowed to leave on a year-long loan while far from the worst center-back on the books.

Smalling shone in Series A to the point where his England career looks set to be revived, with Gareth Southgate heading to Rome to watch a defender whom he looked to be calling all but ruled out.

Solskjaer spoke of his expectation that Smalling in-form will return to United next season, but Roma boss Fonseca hopes to keep him in Italy.

"I will do everything I can to keep him at Roma next year too," he told ESPN. "I know he just wants to stay, let's see what's going on.

"He's an amazing man, so humble, so professional, he's adored by the fans and he's established himself as one of the dressing room leaders.
