Poland's prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, has called on parliament's upper house, the Senate, to speed up the work that would allow the May 10 presidential election to be held through a postal vote.

The election was the subject of heated political debate in Poland, with critics accusing the Government of Law and Justice (PiS) of placing political gain ahead of public health by insisting that the vote be held as scheduled.

Lower parliament house, where PiS has a majority, backed a plan to conduct the presidential election by postal ballot on May 10 in earlier April. But the legislation has yet to be approved by the opposition-controlled Senate.
