Games and Entertainment constituted the lion's share of App Store installations during Q1 2020, followed by apps on Education. Many school districts push the iPad during the coronavirus lockdowns as a tool for at-home learning.
In addition, the analytics firm said that, since the fourth quarter of 2014, global consumer spending on iPad apps has seen its largest year-over-year increase - 16 percent.
During the quarter, customers spent an estimated $2.1bn on iPad apps worldwide. Sensor Tower also notes that about 76 per cent of that expenditure, about $1.6 billion, came from games alone.
Apple's iPhone fuelled a similar surge in downloads of apps in the first quarter of 2020, with first-time installations growing 24 percent year on year. The growth of iPhone apps still outperformed iPad, and consumer spending on iPhone apps during the quarter was actually slightly less than the same period a year earlier.
