The wildly popular Grand Theft Auto 5 from Rockstar will be the next free game in the Epic Games Store, but the online marketplace is currently down when gamers all over the world try to keep the hot title free.

The initial announcement came from a now deleted Epic Games Store tweet which claims that up to 21 May Rockstar will be free to download its popular open-world crime game on a computer. While the tweet is gone now, the launcher from the Epic Games Store suggests that the game is imminent.

Due to Epic's "mystery game," we expect GTA 5 to arrive at the Epic Games Store by 8 a.m. PT/11am ET today (May 14). However, by this time the Epic Games Store is down, probably because of a large number of users coming in to get their free title.

Epic Games acknowledged Twitter problems and claimed that it "works actively to scale" in response to high traffic. This storey will be updated as soon as GTA 5 is available for download.

How to get GTA 5 on PC free download

To be free on the PC for Nab GTA 5, you will need to download the launcher of the Epic Games Store and create an Epic Games account, which you can do on the official Epic Games website (when it is working).

From there, scroll down to the store's 'Free Games' area. GTA 5, based on the time on Epic 's website, is scheduled to open on May 14 at 8 am PT/11am ET. You'll have to free the game until May 21. At the time of this writing, the Epic Store has server problems, but we expect the game to be later today.

If the system requirements of GTA 5's Epic Store are something like the Steam version of your game, you will need at least one Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600, 4 GB of RAM, one Nvidia 9800 GT / AMD 4870 or better and 72 GB of storage for the game. But the recommended spec begins with a Core i5 CPU, a GTX 660.

It is unclear whether GTA 5 in the Epic Games Store supports cross-playing with the Steam version of the game, which is important to be aware of if you want to play in the wildly popular and still updated GTA Online.

Since late 2018, the Epic Games Store offers free games each month, including The Witness, Overcooked, Batman Arkham Collection and Rayman Legends. GTA 5, however, is by far the largest freebie service has yet been secured, and can be the perfect antidote to your boredom.
