Chatting back and forth in Doctor Who Magazine, the two screenwriters revealed that in the 2008 episodes of Moffat's acclaimed Silence in the Library / Forest of the, fans were actually treated with a future version of Doctor (then played by David Tennant), disguised as Doctor Moon's character of Colin Salmon (actually a sentient satellite).
Confused? Well we're going to let them explain it.
"When we did Silence in the Library, you once told me of Doctor Who's Very Last Scene Ever. Still standing? "Moffat was asked by Davies.
As it turned out, this referred to a brief outline that during production Moffat had e-mailed Davies, imagining the future (and past) of the River Song of the Doctor and Alex Kingston, who made her first appearances in these episodes.
"River's not just his wife – she's his widow," Moffat wrote at the time, "in my head (and ONLY in my head, this will probably never appear on screen or be confirmed in any way).
"The 45th Doctor dies in her arms somewhere in the dreadful future, on a battlefield, and makes her the same promise she once made to him – it's not over for you, you will see me again. So River buries her husband and off she goes with his younger selves to have lots of adventures and confuses the hell out of them.
"Until she ends up in the Library Planet's data core, of course, and realizes that she will never see him again. And then she begins to wonder why anyone would call a moon 'Doctor.' Ahhhh ..." "Yeah, some version of that might still work, "continued Moffat. "The doctor worried that she would find herself lonely in the library, popping his dying mind in a moon. Look at these words, O God. I just typed the words!!!!!!
"I can't believe you never remembered it! "And Davies answered. "I have never forgotten this thing about Doctor Moon, it's so clever.
"I think it's him every time I watch that story, it's the Doctor, and nobody knows! "So yes, Colin Salmon IS the Doctor – sort of – and even if this idea never makes filming, fans can now mentally reclassify Silence as a multi-doctoral story in the Library and Forest of the Dead. And we know how Whovians love a technicality ... Doctor who comes back to BBC One at the end of 2020/early 2021
